Why Elephants Forever
My name is Charlotte and I’m a photographer. If you want to know about me, my background and work, please visit www.charlotterushbailey.com.
My goal is to discourage consumers everywhere in the world from buying anything made of elephant ivory. I want to use the power of social media to create a global movement to do this, and I want you to be a part of that. Please follow Elephants Forever and spread the word. Together, we truly can make a difference!
My passion for elephants is longstanding, more than 30 years of experiencing them and their environments throughout Africa and Asia. Elephants Forever is the result of this passion. This is what you need to know:
The market for elephant ivory has skyrocketed. The only way to “harvest” ivory is to kill the elephant. As a result, thousands of elephants are being killed and their ivory illegally shipped out of their homeland, primarily to markets in Asia. Items carved from elephant ivory have been a status symbol for thousands of years. Until this past century, it was believed that elephants were an unlimited resource. Now we know better. The level of poaching is so great that we actually risk a future without elephants in the wild. That is not what any of us want.
Many terrific organizations are working on the complicated parts of the solution — catching the poachers, preventing poaching, intercepting shipments of illegal ivory, finding ways to end elephant-human conflict in places were our habitats overlap, managing government-owned stockpiles of ivory. But no one is devoted solely to the easy part of the solution, which is, just don’t buy ivory! That is what Elephants Forever can do.
